Building an outline for online learning experiences.

Build an outline for a course or other online learning experience.

If you’re not sure if you’re ready to create a course, scroll down to the bottom to “Evaluate yourself to see how “ready” you are to create a course”.

I admire you for sharing your gifts with others. Whether launching an online learning experience is a new idea or it’s a longtime coming, thank you for deciding to share your knowledge.

We find that a great place to begin this journey is to build an outline for the course. Similar to if you were going to write an essay or a book.

Note: If you find it difficult to make it through the creation of the outline, you may benefit from exercises such as mindmapping and brainstorming. Use those exercises to get it all out of your body. When you empty yourself of the chaos it creates space for contemplation and a new understanding of your work.

Crafting a Niche

What is the specific topic your learning experience explores?

Learner Profile

Who is the specific person you creating the learning experience for?

Learning Objectives (learners will learn…)

What will the learner learn to do from the course?

Learning Outcomes (learners will create…)

What outcomes will your learners achieve for themselves

What are all the things a learner must learn in order to achieve the outcome? For example:

  • Module 0: Orientation
  • Module 1: Introduction
  • Module 2: Phase I
  • Module 3: Phase II
  • Module 4: Phase III
  • Module 5: Conclusion

What are the smaller pieces within each module?

  • Module 0: Orientation
    • Lesson 0.1: Syllabus
    • Lesson 0.2: Welcome Session
  • Module 1.0: Introduction
    • Lesson 1.1: What is _____ niche all about?
    • Lesson 1.2: State of the current situation
    • Lesson 1.3: Meet your teacher
    • Lesson 1.4: The methodology
  • Module 2.0: Phase I
  • Module 3.0: Phase II
  • Module 4.0: Phase III
  • Module 5.0: Conclusion

Media to Deliver the Course

Think through the ideal way to deliver your course materials based on the learner profile. Does the learner have a hard time reading? Do they prefer text? How might you find these answers?

  • Text
  • Graphics
  • Slides
  • Audio
  • Video
  • Quizzes
  • Polls
  • Surveys

In the meantime, we recommend always starting by writing the entire learning experience by hand and/or typing on the computer. Once you have the entire course built out, it’s easy to spin it off into different mediums.

Increase the Value of a Course

Once you write out the actual course content and produced the additional media and resources you can now begin to add layers to the course.

  • Private groups for students
  • Live calls or webinars
  • 1-on-1 or group coaching
  • Downloadable resources
  • Payment plans
  • Instructor access
  • Exclusive deals/perks/discounts
  • Certifications

Each layer, or, additional product or service, can be added as you offer different tiers of the course.

Evaluate yourself to see how “ready” you are to create a course.
